Centennial Overview


The Moclips Centennial will be an 11 day celebration packed with several events. Updated information will be uploaded to this site on a regular basis. UPDATED 6/10/2005
Employees of several North Beach restaurants, hotel/motels and resorts will be dressed in period costume of 100 years ago. Pam Rasmussen of the Sand Dollar Inn in Pacific Beach is organizing the making of these garments with the help
of several volunteers

Sometime during the centennial, 75 special glass floats will be planted along the beach from Ocean Shores to Moclips. Each float will be etched, "Moclips 1905-2005". These 5 inch diameter colored floats have nets and are in red, blue and green. Lucky beachcombers who find one need to bring them to the museum to register for our grand prize, a raffle for a two night stay at the Ocean Crest Resort. Other prizes: special hand-blown glass floats from Avalon Glassworks of West Seattle commemorating the Moclips Centennial will be given away to other lucky beachcombers. These large gold-colored floats will be etched with the Moclips Centennial logo. All floats found on the beach to be kept by the finder. UPDATED 2/17/05 - Many employees of North Beach restaurants, hotels/motels and resorts from Moclips to Ocean Shores will be wearing vintage clothing from 100 years ago during the 11 day centennial.

FRIDAY, JUNE 24, 2005 - (UPDATED 3/8/05)
Benefit SEVEN course dinner at the Ocean Crest Resort. This is a fund-raiser for the Museum of the North Beach. Cost is $100.00 per person (representing 100 years of history). Price excludes beverages, tax and gratuity. After Ocean Crest's costs are deducted, the remaining proceeds will be donated to the Museum of the North Beach. There will be two seatings; one at 4:00pm and the other at 8:00pm. Maximum capacity per seating is 50. Menu includes the following:

Iceberg Wedge Salad - Toasted Parmesan Shell, Estella Farm Wynochee River Blue

Cheese, Poached Cranberries and Smoked Oregon Hazelnuts.

Phyllo Purse - Filled with Wild Local Mushrooms and Goat Cheese, Black Truffle Veloute Sauce

Razor Clam Chowder

Traditional Quinault Blue Back Salmon Bake

Grilled Lumber Jack Steak

Orange Chicken

Cascade Mountain Huckleberry Tart, Balsamic Huckleberry Ice Cream

SATURDAY, JUNE 25, 2005 - (UPDATED 6/10/05)
Ocean-going canoes from the Quinault Nation arriving at the Moclips River around 11:00am. An authentic Blueback salmon bake will welcome our neighbors from Taholah. Special gifts will be presented to each member of the Quinault Nation who makes the journey down the coast. The salmon bake will start at 10:00am also includes fry bread, clam chowder and cole slaw. Cost is $12.00 per person. Bring your camera and appetite!

The next event will be a presentation on Charley Gant, the editor of the Moclips Ocean Wave, the first newspaper in Moclips in 1909. Gant was very witty in his attacks on political figures. He was also a prolific poet. John Hughes, editor of the Aberdeen Daily World who is a major fan of Charley Gant has accepted our request to make this presentation. The event is FREE but a donation to the museum is suggested. This will be held at the North Beach Community Center in Pacific Beach in the late afternoon or early evening.

SUNDAY, JUNE 26, 2005 - (UPDATED 6/10/05) A 95 year old trophy from an auto race held on the beach in front of the Moclips Beach Hotel on July 4, 1910 is returning to Moclips. We will have the trophy on display at the museum. Also, from 11am to 4pm, Avalon Glassworks will be showing and selling their wonderful hand-blown glass floats at the museum. Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Chairman, Paul O’Brien and crew members will be dressed in period costume with one of the Lady Washington’s long boats at state park property (4th & Railroad) in the morning.

Also, at 6pm, there will be a slide presentation of the Quinault Nation by Larry Workman. The event is FREE but a donation to the museum is suggested. This will be held at the North Beach Community Center in Pacific Beach.

MONDAY, JUNE 27, 2005 - (UPDATED 6/10/05) Walking tour of Cape Elizabeth on the Quinault Reservation starting at 10:00AM. The timing with the minus tide at 11:44am is perfect! A boxed lunch from the Ocean Crest Resort is included. Cost is $15.00 per person with proceeds going to the Taholah School and the Museum of the North Beach.

At 6pm, there will be a history of the H.R, Smith mill seminar presented by Arvid Nordman. The event is FREE but a donation to the museum is suggested. This will be held at the North Beach Community Center in Pacific Beach.

TUESDAY, JUNE 28, 2005 - (UPDATED 6/10/05) In the morning, there will be a Moclips Walking History Tour. A map will be available giving the location of such buildings icons as the Moclips Beach Hotel, Forwood Brothers Jewelers, the theater, the Northern Pacific depot and the canneries. Signs will be also posted at these locations. Tour to start at top of hill near the old Moclips School and Moclips Grocery at 10am.

There will be a presentation of the Northern Pacific Railway by Ocean Shores resident and NP buff, Norm Snow. The event is FREE but a donation to the museum is suggested. This will be held at the North Beach Community Center in Pacific Beach at 6:30pm..

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2005 -(UPDATED 4/25/05) Quinault Nation Day, with basket weavers, canoe and totem carvers. Quinault basket weavers will be selling their wares. Location for these events will be at state park property at 4th & Railroad on the flats in Moclips. We are hoping the Quinault Pride folks will also be there to sell their wonderful seafood items.

THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 2005 - (UPDATED 6/10/05)
A dedication ceremony for the Moclips Post Office 100th Anniversary. Included will be the unveiling of the special postmark designed by Moclips artist, Lee Marriott. This wonderful piece of artwork will only be available on June 30th at the Moclips Post Office. Also, a special award will be given to the current postmaster listing the names of all postmasters of the Moclips Post Office since 1905. If you cannot make it to the ceremony and would like your personally addressed, stamped envelopes postmarked with this special design, send them to the Moclips Post Office, Moclips, WA 98562, attention postmaster. NOTE: Special first day cover envelopes will be available for the postmark. Each legal size envelope will have a dwawing of a vintage Moclips icon. Artwork by Moclips artist, Lee Marriott.

In the late afternoon, there will be a vintage bathing suit contest for both men and women at the Green Lantern Tavern in Copalis Beach. Time and winning prize is yet to be determined. This event is FREE but a donation to the museum is suggested.

FRIDAY, JULY 1, 2005 - (UPDATED 4/30/05)

On July 1, 2005, during the Moclips Centennial, there will be tours of three North Beach museums including the Ocean Shores Interpretive Center, the Museum of the North Beach and the Taholah Museum. This is a bus trip that begins in Pacific Beach at 9:30am at the former parking lot of the Bank of the Pacific. The bus will make a stop at the Quinault Beach Resort to pick up more passengers. The first tour will be at the Interpretive Center shortly before 10:30. Expect at least an hour to view all their displays. At about 11:30, the tour will leave Ocean Shores and make a short stop at Ocean City to view the Dorothy Anderson cabin. From there the bus will take everyone to Pacific Tango in Pacific Beach for lunch. The next stop will be at the Museum of the North Beach in
Moclips. Allow approximately 45 minutes for the tour. After Moclips, the tour continues on to the Taholah Museum. Again, we are estimating this visit at about 45 minutes. The bus will return you to your car at Pacific Beach or the Quinault Beach Resort.

Cost is $20.00 per person which includes the bus trip, lunch (tax& gratuity) and a small donation to each museum. Space is limited to 44 persons. Please RSVP by sending your check before May 31 to: Museum of the North Beach, PO Box 231, Moclips, WA 98562. Tickets will be mailed to you.

At 7pm, there will be a presentation of the Moclips Beach Hotel and its owner, Dr. Edward Lycan. This narrative will be presented by Gail Gage of Bothell and Moclips. She and her husband Jim, along with Dave and Deb Masters, purchased property and built a family home and vacation rental on the southeast corner of where the hotel once stood. The event is FREE but a donation to the museum is suggested. This will be held at the North Beach Community Center in Pacific Beach.

SATURDAY, JULY 2, 2005 - (UPDATED 4/25/05)
During the morning hours, there will be a vintage wagon on the beach. Visitors can have their pictures taken sitting on the wagons, much like those from 100 years ago. Our resident photographer, Phil Webber from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has agreed to take your photos between 10:00am and 1:00pm. Cost is $10.00 per photo. Pictures will be available to pick up the following day at the museum. Also in the morning, we are planning a children's play time with games from 100 years ago. Kids will also be making their own kites. The Old Time Medicine Show presenting old time music will also be on hand for your entertainment. This event, sponsored by the descendant's of Edward Lycan will be held at the new Lycan Park at 4th & Pacific along the beach. Although FREE, there will be hot dogs sold to help pay for the upkeep of Lycan Park.

The evening will be our largest event - the evening costume ball and dinner. Come dressed in vintage clothing from an era long gone. Enjoy a dinner representing the menu from the Moclips Beach Hotel of 1905. A band has already signed on so this night promises to be a memorable one! The room will be decorated with historic photos and artifacts of old Moclips. Cost is $35.00 per person with a choice of grilled salmon or prime rib. Dinner also includes crab cocktail, razor clam chowder, salad and blackberry cobbler. Door prizes will also be given away. This event will be held at the Pacific Beach Resort (Navy Base) in Pacific Beach and is limited to 225 persons. PLEASE RSVP BY MAY 31.

SUNDAY, JULY 3, 2005 - (UPDATED 3/8/05)
The MO-JO Run HAS BEEN CANCELLED. We encourage you to drive 8 miles north to be part of the Taholah Days festivities. This is an annual event that is full of activities. This year, the Quinault Nation will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Quinault River Treaty signed at Taholah on July 1, 1855. MONDAY, JULY 4, 2005 - (UPDATED 2/17/05) At 12 noon, we will be burying a time capsule to be opened on July 4, 2105. Inside will be photos, CD's and artifacts from this time in our history. We hope to have this located at Lycan Park. If you have suggestions on what should be in the time capsule, please let us know. More information will be forthcoming. At 10:00pm, the annual Fire O'er the Water Fireworks display will be held in Ocean City. Each year this event gets bigger. We hope to make this the biggest yet. This will be a great way to send off the Moclips Centennial for the next 100 years. Both events are FREE but a donation to the museum is suggested.

PLEASE LET US KNOW WHICH EVENTS YOU WILL BE ATTENDING. The special presentations at the North Beach Community Center can hold approximately 85 persons.
