MONAD,
the NP Logo
Ever
wonder where that nice Northern Pacific logo came from or what it
meant? Fellow member, Kathryn Caughey, brought us some information
pertaining to this very subject.
There are numerous interpretations of this symbol but the
most common is good luck. The two commas represent
the Yin and Yang. These are the
Two Principles of which the world descends: Light and
Darkness,
Force and Matter, Motion and Rest, Heaven and Earth,
Male and Female and so on.
There
are variations of the Monad in other countries including North
America. It has been found on Pueblo Indian pottery and bead work
of the Plains Indians. The Chinese used it as a charm
to fend off evil influences.
E.H.
McHenry, chief engineer of the Northern Pacific, saw the design
on the Korean flag at the 1893 Chicago
Worlds Fair. The Northern
Pacific was searching for a trademark and McHenry realized this was it.
After returning to St. Paul he and Charles Fee, general passenger agent
for the NP, worked out the final design.
The Northern Pacific Railway used this symbol on passenger
cars, freight cars, stationery, matchbooks and traffic
office windows. It was recognizable
as a travelling billboard in 48 states and Mexico.

Going
Once, Going Twice...
Many
of you were contacted in September to decide if we should bid
on a one-of-a-kind auto trophy from Moclips. The trophy was featured
on eBay and was top prize for an
auto race held in Moclips on July 4, 1910. The race was sponsored by
the Seattle Auto Club. We have many photos from the same event which
would have made a terrific display in the museum. Not only were we
encouraged
to bid on this item, we also received pledges from the membership
totalling $1100.00 to pay for it!
Unfortunately,
we were outbid even with our $1500.00 maximum. It went for $2275.
We emailed the winning bidder to ask if they would loan us the trophy
in 2005.
He told us he bid
for a friend in Boston and has forwarded our email on to them.
We were overwhelmed by the positive response to this on such short notice.
Thank you to
all who voted and gave pledges!

Business
Support
Moclips-By-The-Sea
gratefully appreciates the support from our local businesses.
Their interest and caring concern are a big part of what makes the North
Beach a great
place to live! We have included a list of those member businesses in
a special insert
within this newsletter. Thank you for your support!
Did
You Notice??
This
edition of the MOCLIPS OCEAN WAVE has a temporary name change. We
found the original Quinault spelling of Moclips and thought
it would be fun to include it.
Another variation:

Classified
Information
In
September, we placed an ad in the North Coast News in search of North
Beach museum items. The ad ran for four weeks with one response.
Sandy Hermey and Patty Montague of Ocean Shores Upholstery and Collectibles
donated the following items:
From Sandy:
A large oil can from the shipwreck S.S. CATALA. This ship was
used as a floating hotel during the 1962 Seattle Worlds
Fair and was brought to Ocean Shores in 1963 for use as a base
for the Ocean Shores Charter Fleet. New ears Day 1965,
a major wind storm combined with a high tide grounded the ship.
Over the years, parts of it rusted away and some of it was hauled
away. Part of it is still buried in the sand.
From
Patty: Several different Mohawk Packing labels, large placemats
from the Ocean Shores Inn and photos of the S.S. Catala which
will be enhanced and enlarged for the museum.
THANK YOU
very much Sandy and Patty!!!

Centennial
Celebration
Here is another
idea: Hold a PARADE and POTLATCH - Perhaps the parade
would end at the former NP Depot site where the potlatch would also
be held. We hope that a NEW depot and museum will be
in this location by then!
Your input would be appreciated! In addition to what should be done,
we need to know when the celebration should be in 2005. Let us know.
Meeting
Announcement
Our
first general meeting of MOCLIPS-BY-THE-SEA has been scheduled for
Saturday, January 19, 2002. This will be a dinner meeting at Paddies
Perch in Pacific Beach;
time 6:00pm. Being this is a 3 day weekend for some, we are hoping for
a good turnout. A separate mailer including menu will be sent separately.
Please RSVP at that time. Our first priorities are: Outlining the various
committees: ADVERTISING, CENTENNIAL, VENDOR, EVENT, DISPLAY, HISTORICAL
and PLANNING. (If weve missed any, let us know) and establishing
our by-laws. In addition, the Executive Committee has discussed holding
our annual meetings in June of each year.
Oooops
We misspelled the
following name:
HI-TIDE OCEAN BEACH RESORT (not HI-TIDES)
PLEASE accept our sincere apologies.
Did
You Know?
In
1973, John Wayne and Eddie Albert filmed the movie McQ in
Seattle, Moclips, Pacific Beach and Pt. Grenville. The final scene
was on Pacific Ave at the Moclips beach approach. A car chase began
at Analyde Gap between Pacific Beach and Moclips under the Northern
Pacific railroad trestle (now gone) and subsequently ended at Pt.
Grenville. A fake piling was placed where the remaining pilings
were in front of
the hotel and was hit in the car chase. Today, all thats left
of the original pilings is about 4 inches of ONE piling, the rest are
buried
in tons of sand. A video copy of the
movie will be shown at the museum.
At the Ocean Shores Library, we saw one of the original scripts for McQ.
Check it out!

We are currently
looking into bulk rate and non-profit status requirements from the
post
office to save on our postage. In the meantime, it became obvious that
this portion of
the newsletter needed to be used (since we cannot mail our newsletter
through the
postal system stapled together and our budget does not allow it to be
professionally
printed). So here goes:
Due to unavailable
space in our previous newsletters, we did not give proper thanks to
the people who have helped us. We are now setting the record straight.

searching the world (literally) for these old images. Most of these are
old postcards have been enlarged to 8 x 10 photos. They will be mounted
on mat board and displayed on the museum walls using velcro. This method
gives a sort of floating perception and looks great!
While in Seattle recently, we found two more wonderful vintage brochures
from the Pacific Beach Hotel - they are in perfect condition! That makes
3 total - they will be on display.
Moclips & NB
Artifacts
In
September, we received a stack of older paper items relating to all
communities in the North Beach. They will help us in our research.
Also donated was an empty shell casing found in front of the Navy
Base. These donations were provided by the Wacky Warehouse. THANKS!
We also received several newspaper articles relating to Moclips and Pacific
Beach. These were donated by Jackie Davis, postmaster of the Pacific
Beach Post Office. THANK YOU!
On eBay, we acquired a 1908 Northern Pacific RR map & schedule (12
pages) which includes stops in Pacific Beach and Moclips, (6:35am departure
from Moclips).
In October, member Kathryn Caughey came through again! She donated an
original LARGE Northern Pacific Railroad sign! THANK YOU!
These items will be on permanent display at the museum. For other items
donated, see page 3.
If you have an item to donate/loan let us know!
