Issue 2 Volume 2

It’s Official!   Moclips-By-The-Sea - a Non-Profit Corporation
On April 1, 2002, Moclips-By-The-Sea became a non-profit corporation! The official
notification from the state has been framed and will be on display once the museum is
up and running. We want to thank all of you who helped by voting in the By-Laws and
the board of directors who approved the Articles of Incorporation.

This is a big step for us and a rather important one. If anything, it helps legitimize who
we are and what we intend to do. It also paves the way for us to obtain our 501C3
status with the IRS. Donations will then become tax deductible.

Now that we have passed this major step, we can approach the Washington State
Parks Department in regards to leasing the land at Railroad Avenue and 5th Street in
Moclips for the museum’s permanent location. By the way, if you have any INTERIOR
photos of the old depot, please contact a board member.

It’s About TIME!

Another unique piece of Moclips memorabilia went on the auction block on eBay. A 90+ year old mantle clock came up for bid. It is small and made of what appears to be cast iron. In the face of the dial are the words, “FORWOOD BROTHERS JEWELERS,
Moclips, Washington”. (We have street scene photos that include this store).

After the 10-day auction run, your Moclips-By-The-Sea Historical Society and Museum
officially WON THE CLOCK!

Kelly Calhoun and Lee Marriott bid on this great clock at the last possible moment to insure this “timely” piece of Moclips history comes back home to the beach.

The clock was put on eBay by an antique store in Aberdeen and was brought to them from someone who was cleaning out an attic. Just goes to prove that timing is everything!

Garage for Sale

On Memorial Day weekend Moclips-By-The-Sea sponsored a garage sale to raise extra funds for museum purchases and museum construction. The sale was in Ocean Shores at the former location of Dolores’ Antiques. We thank Dolores May for donating this perfect space to MBTS!

We generated a whopping $3130.59! This was above and beyond our initial goals and expectations!

Moclips-By-The-Sea wishes to thank the following for their donation items and/or volunteer time:

Lola Bennett, Elwood & Barbara Budnik, Kelly Calhoun, Richard & Stella Callentine, Kathryn Caughy, Mary Christiansen, Gloria & Sam Cohea, Jim & Patti Courtright, Jackie Davis, Vicky Delaney, Patty Draheim, Frank Fitzgerald, Midge Gamboa, Joan Hepperlin, Sandy Hermey, Michael Isom, Kathy Jaquet, Juanita Johnson, Marjorie Johnson, Linda Kelley, Lorraine Kramer, Kate Long, Lee Marriott, Maggie Maskell, Dolores May, Sharon & John McCarthy, Elaine McDonald, Yvonne McKinney, Patty Montague, Dianna Moore, Joe Mosser, Virginia Nordman, Ocean Crest Resort, Ned & Sharon Pleus, Lynn Roof, Synchronicity Stained Glass, Barbara & Ruben Topete, Bill & Eleanor Ward, Kim Weidman, Kim Wheeldon, Cindylee& Michael White.

Awesome Donation

The internet auction site Ebay, can be a great source for finding old and unusual things. It would take years of looking and many trips across the country to find what you are looking for. Thanks to eBay, those items can be right at your fingertips - day or night.

Chris Murphy found an excellent original copy of a brochure from about 1908-1910 titled, “Facts Pertaining to MOCLIPS, Washington as a Health and Pleasure Resort”. There are ads for some of the businesses from the time period such as the Moclips Livery and Transfer Company, the Moclips Canning Company, Forwood Brothers and of course the Moclips Beach Hotel. This rare item was posted on eBay back in 2000. Chris won the brochure and has donated this wonderful find to the museum! THANK YOU Chris!

First Annual Meeting

On Saturday, June 1, 2002, MBTS held its first annual meeting at the Pacific Beach Resort in Pacific Beach. Our guest speaker was John Larson of the Polson Museum in Hoquiam. Forty members were in attendance for John’s entertaining slide show presentation on the history of the Polson and Hoquiam in general.

Mr. Larson also brought raffle tickets for a 2002 Ford Mustang. Only 2500 tickets will be sold at $20.00 each (tax & licensing paid). All proceeds benefit the Polson Museum.

Four board members will be attending the Washington Museum Association’s conference in mid June. We hope to learn many things about running a museum not the least of which is grant writing. The members in attendance at this meeting approved the funds for Kelly Calhoun, Kathy Jaquet, Lee Marriott and Jackie Davis to attend. More information will be provided in the September newsletter.

We thank the Pacific Beach Resort for hosting our meeting at their facility! The meeting was a big success! Thanks to all who attended.

A Note from Moclipsdude

Some of us are searching the internet for North Beach items, specifically on eBay. In some instances, we have bid against each other which only drives the price up. These items won by moclipsdude are intended for the museum. We are NOT bidding on these items for ourselves but for the museum and ALL of us. Thank you!

Moclips "dot org"

Now that we are an official non-profit corporation, we qualify for a (.org) status on the internet. Kelly Cline, that super webmaster at Truckin’ Express has set aside the domain name of MOCLIIPS.ORG for our official website. Kelly has paid the first years subscription of $25.00 as his donation to the organization. THANK YOU Kelly! We will “sit” on this until next year. At that time we will obtain a server and “kick-in” the website. That will give us two years to expose ourselves to the world prior to the centennial.

A Star is born
In the May edition of the Ocean Observer community newspaper, an article about Copalis Beach was featured (copy enclosed). Member Lorraine Kramer was interviewed for her memories of this historic beach-side community. Thank you Lorraine and the Ocean Observer for a very enlightening and entertaining story!

Gems and Gemstones
Your membership dollars go into a general fund that helps pay for printing our newsletter and other mailings in addition to postage. We rely on donations to help with museum costs and acquisitions. You can specify where your money goes.

Roy Tottie, Bev Callaway and Paul Billy sent cash donations in April and May.

Vice President Virginia Nordman donated cash in the name of Evelyn Tottie. We think this is an excellent idea to remember those who were a big part of Moclips and the North Beach.

In March, Synchronicity Stained Glass in Ocean Shores donated $125.00 worth of vintage unused postcards. They will help defray postage, envelope and paper costs for our incidental mailings to the membership. THANK YOU all!

All in the Family
Neither sleet, nor rain, nor snow nor passage of time could have predicted this!

MBTS member, Mary Christiansen of Quinault has been appointed postmaster of the Moclips Post Office. CONGRATULATIONS MARY!

Eighty-seven years ago, in 1915, Mary Northup was the postmaster of Moclips. Mary Northup was married to Mary Christiansen’s great-great uncle! Of course the post office then was not where it is now. Postage was one cent (not 34).

To further complicate things, Mary is related to member, Florence (Northup) Miles of Forks. (See her story in the March, 2002 issue of the Moclips Ocean Wave). Florence is Kelly Calhoun’s aunt which means Mary is his cousin (a recent discovery). From information supplied by Florence, he is also related to the Summerlins who used to own and operate the Moclips Livery Stable.

Search and Research

Here is the question of the new millenium. What ever happened to the giant wood carving of the razor clam in Ocean Shores? Some of us had our picture taken with this wonderful North Beach icon back in the 1960’s. Rumor has it that this big bi-valve was stolen. If so, by who?

Another story says it is buried somewhere. Do you know the truth? We’d LOVE to have it outside the museum - we promise we won’t tell where we got it.

Museum: Moclips & NB Artifacts
In March, Marjorie Johnson donated 2 ceramic mugs from the Ocean Shores Inn. They belonged to her father, William P. White who was a Pacific Beach resident since 1967.

The Wacky Warehouse came through once again! A circa 1910-1920’s auto wheel with wooden spokes was found on the beach by B. J. Haynes. Included in their donation was a 1961 mailing to Victor “Shorty” Borden of the Mohawk Packing Company and a stencil used by the M.R. Smith Lumber and Shingle Mill for grading lumber. More vintage Pacific Beach photos were donated to MBTS by the Wacky Warehouse.

Chloe Taylor donated postcards and old photos including an image from 1964 of the Joe Creek bridge after it was damaged by the Alaskan earthquake tidal wave. She also included copies of the 1990 Daily World article about Moclips with member Harold Schmidtke’s photo collection.

Katie Detrick donated a great sterling silver spoon engraved, “Rock at Grenville Point, Moclips, WN”.

Another spoon was found on eBay. It is also sterling silver circa 1907 and is engraved, “The Arch at Pt. Grenville Near Moclips, Wash”. Also found on the internet was a mint condition 1962 Ocean Shores Low Tide Chart complete with photo of the wood razor clam sculpture and who we think is Miss Washington (anyone know her name?)

Sharon and John McCarthy of Ocean Shores donated 3 old logging saws. These were found in Aberdeen many years ago.

Jean Perry, postmaster of the Copalis Beach post office donated 3 awesome images of Copalis Crossing (one with BOTH wooden arches).

Arvid and Virginia Nordman donated a 1975 book about the history of the M.R. Smith Shingle Mill. Great story and photos!

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR DONATIONS!

Some of these items will be on permanent display. Others will be on loan with proper credit given to the owner. If you have items to donate or loan, let us know!

Business Support
Moclips-By-The-Sea appreciates the support from our local businesses. Their interest and concern are a big part of what makes the North Beach a great place to live! We have included a list of those member businesses in a special insert within this newsletter. Thank you!

This newsletter is named after the first newspaper from Moclips; the MOCLIPS OCEAN WAVE. Published in 1909 it only lasted a few issues. We intend to be
around a lot longer!

NOTE: If you would like a back issue of our quarterly newsletter, please send $2.00 and the issue (month and year) you are ordering to the above post office
box. Our first issue was JUNE 2001. Thank you!
