At
a meeting on January 12, 2004 between the boards of the Norh Beach
Historical & Preservation Society and Moclips-By-The-Sea, there
was a unanimous vote to merge the two organizations into one. Discussions
between the Ocean City and Moclips groups about this proposal have
been going on since October of 2002.
"This
decision will benefit both organizations as it becomes a larger entity.
Combining our resources and artifacts will ultimatel;y benefit the
general public", said president Kelly Calhoun. "We are
very excitied about all the new posibilities and future changes".
Our
general meetings will remain the same (January, June & September.
However, the board meetings will increase to once a month. We have
also increased our board of directors from six to ten. Lisa Riener,
Jean Kyle, Carol Davis and Shari Poplin have accepted positions on
the board. Members of the former North Beach Historical Society have
become members in the new organization. This has pushed our total
membership to over 300.
For
now, the historical society and museum names will remain until a
more descriptive one is found.
All
historical items from Ocean City are being moved to the museum.
January
General Meeting a Great Success!
On
the night of January 31, we had a huge turnout for our general meeting.
There were 56 in attendance - our largest meeting ever!
Hoquiam
mayor Jack Durney spoke about the relationship between Moclips and
Hoquiam. Unfortunately, due to a serious family illness, Daily World
editor John Huges could not attend.
Special
awards were given to Lois Johnson and Mary Hill in recognition of
their work for MBTS. Lois for her effort in making sure the museum
was open through our volunteer program and Mary Hill for her talent
in obtaining new members. Congratulations and a big thank you to
both of you!
Nine
of our ten board members were present - which was the first time
since the merger.
We
want to thank the Ocean Crest Resort for providing the meeting facility
and for hosting an excellent dinner.
Another
Gold Mine on EBay
One
day while searching for North Beach artifacts on EBay, we found a
listing for an empty envelope mailed to Italy in August of 1905.
The return address was "Robert Chabot, Real Estate, Moclips,
Wash".
Mr.
Chabot, Dr Edward Lycan & wives purchased land from a Moclips
homesteader and platted the townsite of Moclips. Dr. Lycan of course
built the first and second Moclips Beach Hotels in 1905 and 1907.
Prior
to Chabot's land sales in Moclips, he was a cranberry farmer in what
is now the area of Ocean City.
This
envelope also has an outline of Chehalis county (Grays Harbor).
What's
New at the Museum
We
have added a new rack to display all of our items for sale in the
museum. this rack revolves and has lots of storage on the inside.
It was donated by Synchronicity of Moclips.
Mary
Hill donated several cases of candles (intall chimney glasses). These
are for sale for only $1.00 each and accordeintg to Mary, they last
a very long time.
Lots
and lots of old bottles were found at an old dump site here on the
North Beach. Among other items found were a 1940's silver dime, a
Washington State tax token and numerous shell casings. This site
contained Navy items dumped here during World War II.
A
most prized artifact is coming soon to the museum - The 1910's t;ypewriter
that was used by Norah Berg to write Lady on the Beach published
in 1952. this item has been on loan to the North Beach Historical
society at the cabin in Ocean City.
Aperfect
companion artifact to the typewriter was donated by MBTS member Robert
D. Gregg & Sons. A copy of Lady on the Beach that was won by
Chris Murphy of Oklahoma on Ebay was bought and donated by Bob & Judy
Gregg. This book was autographed by Norah to her doctor and an appointment
card for her husband Sarge. Thank You!!!!
Private
Tours & Coming Events at the Museum
During
the past year, we have opened the museum on a traditionally closed
day for private showings. Two groups from Ocean Shores, Let's Talk
and the Ocean Shores Community Club were treated to their own tours.
So far this year, we hosted a tour for the Red Hat Society of North
Beach in February and another coming up in April with the Ocean Shores
Community Club making it their second visit.
On
March 14, the museum will host glass blowers with samples of their
artwork for sale. The company, Avalon Glass works of West Seattle
will display their unique glass floats that were inspired by prized
beachcombers fishing floats found alond the coast. The one day show
will run from 10:00 am to 4 pm on sunday the 14th. If you would like
more information, please contact Pam Rasmussen in Pacific Beach at
360-276-8325.
If
you know of a group that would like to visit the museum on a private
tour, please call the museum at 360-276-4441. You may also send us
an email at kelly@moclips.org. We need to know a date and the approximate
number.
Gems
and Gemstones
Your
membership dollars go to a general fund that pays for printing our
newsletter, other printings and postage. We rely on donations to
help with museum costs and acquisitions.
Roy
Tottie of Hoquiam and Betty Nye from Olympia sent cash donations.
Marjorie Johnson of Pacific Beach sent a cash donation in honor of
Gordon & Ardith Adams. Tina and Gvido Bars sent a donation above
their dues.
THANKS
YOU ALL!
Shacks
on the Beach at Copalis
Member
and museum volunteer, Joann Tobin called us in January to say someone
she knows had old photos of the beach at Copalis. Several old shacks
were in the images. These turned out not to be the the famous clam
shacks, but rather dressing rooms for people wanting to go swimming.
According to her source, these buildings were built from wreckage
of a ship
If
this is true, could it have been from the Charles E. Falk that ran
aground at Copalis Rocks in 1909?
There
were plans to turn this shpwreck into a hotel.
What
About the Dorothy Anderson Cabin?
At
our February board meeting, the topic of the Dorothy Anderson cabin
became a major issue. As you may recall in a former newsletter, the
cabin, now located on Highway 109 in Ocean City had o be removed
from this privately owned property. The owners of Driftwood Acres
in Copalis Beach offered a small parcel on their property but we
were concerned that the same problem would come up later when it
had to be moved again. Board member Shari Poplin offered to have
the cabin moved to her property located in Ocean City along Highway
109. So after much discussion, it was decided to go ahead with this
move. The dismantling of the add-on section in the rear will be dumped
at the new site in preparation of the cabin move in May. Thank you,
Shari fo saving the cabin!

Day Weekend. Please contact us if you have things to donate or can
help with the sale.
MBTS
Benefits from Antique Show
The
2nd annual Antique & Collectible Show in Ocean Shores was another
huge success. The Action Committee on Tourism (A.C.T.) who sponsored
this event, did an outstanding job in promoting the show for the
second year in a row.
One
of the highlights of the event is an evaluation area where items
can be reviewed for age and value at a $2.00 charge per item. The
money collected is then distributed among three non-profit groups
This year, MBTS was one of the recipients, receiving a check for
$305.00!
Thank
you A.C.T.!
